Shade sail UV protection is measured as either a UPF rating or a UV-R blockage percentage — the same measurement, two labels.
Look for a fabric independently tested to AS/NZS 4399 with at least 95% UV-R, ideally 98–99% for children’s areas, pools, and commercial spaces. Rainbow Shade’s Z16 is independently tested to block up to 99% UV-R — one of the highest verified ratings available in Australia.
UPF works like SPF for sunscreen — UPF 50 blocks about 98% of UV. UV-R is the direct percentage figure, which is what Rainbow Shade uses across our range for an exact, unambiguous number.
| UV-R Blockage | Approx. UPF |
|---|---|
| 93% | UPF 15 |
| 96% | UPF 25 |
| 98% | UPF 50 |
| 99% | UPF 50+ |
What matters most: the rating must be independently tested to AS/NZS 4399 and cover both UVA and UVB. A vague “UV resistant” claim with no standard behind it isn’t a real rating.
| Fabric | Construction | UV-R Rating | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Z16 | Knitted HDPE | Up to 99% | Residential, pools, playgrounds |
| Extreme32 | Heavy knitted HDPE | Up to 95.8% | Commercial, car parks, schools |
| DriZ | Waterproof PVC | Up to 100% | Light commercial alfresco |
| Serge Ferrari 502/702/902 | PVC/PTFE membrane | High, independently rated | Large commercial, architectural |
| Soltis Mesh | PVC-coated mesh | High solar control | External blinds, screens |
| Sunbrella | Solution-dyed acrylic | High, fade-resistant | Residential shade sails |
Yes. UV radiation itself breaks down fibres and stabilisers over time. Cheap, unstabilised fabric can lose significant protection within 2–3 years. Quality UV-stabilised HDPE like Z16 and Extreme32 typically holds its rating for 8–12+ years.
Watch for: visible fading, thinning, small holes, or noticeably more light passing through than when new.
To extend performance: clean with mild soap only, re-tension seasonally, remove during extreme storms, inspect fittings annually.
What UV rating should I look for in a shade sail?
At least 95% UV-R (UPF 25+), and 98–99% (UPF 50+) for children’s areas, pools, and commercial spaces. Z16 achieves up to 99%.
Is UPF 50 the same as 99% UV blockage?
Close, UPF 50 is roughly 98%. UPF 50+ covers anything above that, including fabrics like Z16 at up to 99%.
Does colour affect UV protection?
Slightly — darker shades block marginally more UV, but the difference is small between premium fabrics of the same construction.
How long does UV protection last?
Quality UV-stabilised HDPE typically holds its rating for 8–12+ years. Cheap fabric can degrade significantly within 2–3 years.
Can a high-UV-rated sail still let UV through at the edges?
Yes — this is usually an installation issue, not a fabric one. UV travels at an angle, so poor pitch or unoverlapped joins let it through underneath. Correct angle and 300mm+ overlap fixes it.
Rainbow Shade has manufactured and supplied independently tested, UV-stabilised shade fabrics across Australia for over 30 years — every fabric in our range comes with a documented, tested UV-R rating.
